Angry reactions to energy minister Rob Jetten: ‘Is it believed?’ & More Latest News Here

There are many angry reactions about the statements that energy minister Rob Jetten made to NU.nl and in Op1 on Wednesday evening. For example, he indicated to the former that gas will remain expensive, also in the future. A wry message now that thousands of households are in danger of getting into trouble. In Op1, he promised that no one will be cut off from gas and electricity this winter because they can no longer pay the bill, but many people do not dare to rely on that.

European measures, but also those from the own country, will certainly help to keep the energy market under control. But the price will always remain high, the minister thinks. “I feel very strongly the wake-up call that this is a lasting change,” he tells NU.nl. “We have built part of our economy on very cheap gas that we produced in Groningen or obtained from Russia. That is not going to come back.”

‘No one should be left out in the cold’

The statement that the cabinet believes that no one should be closed this winter because they can no longer pay the energy bill is met with skepticism. That “is the promise for the coming winter”, said the minister in Op1.

The cabinet is currently consulting with energy companies about ways to prevent disconnections. According to Jetten, it would be extra wry if people were left without gas and electricity due to payment problems, “while we know that a good structural solution will be available from 2023”.

According to Zamire Willems, Jetten “does not feel the urgency” and continues with his “idealistic agenda, at the expense of the people”, she writes on Twitter.

Earlier it leaked that the cabinet is working on a fund for people who cannot pay the energy bill. At the moment it is still being discussed who, for example, would be eligible for support from the fund.

‘People are already in trouble’

Ombudsman in Rotterdam, Marianne den Anker, points out that there are already many people who are in trouble. “If the winter comes, it will only get worse. People no longer have any idea which passbooks they still have to slide for each account that comes in.” Den Anker thinks that people will not be pleased with a “fund for this, an emergency bandage for that”, she says in Good Morning Netherlands on NPO 1. “People don’t trust the government anyway. So he (Jetten, ed.) can say that, but is it really believed?”

There is a lot of social unrest, says Den Anker. “In Rotterdam people are protesting because they feel that they are not being taken seriously. Does The Hague understand the urgency we are in?”

VVD MP Ruben Brekelmans, also a guest in Good Morning Netherlands, does believe in Jetten’s “firm” statement. “Otherwise he won’t say it so explicitly,” he says. “At the moment he cannot give a very concrete indication of what that will look like.”

Short term solution

On Budget Day, the cabinet will allocate billions to ease the pain of the high prices. In the meantime, a solution for the short term is being worked on: the cabinet will continue consultations with energy suppliers on Thursday. The energy companies also agree that closures are out of the question, says Jetten.

De Telegraaf reported on Wednesday evening that the cabinet is considering granting credit to energy suppliers. People who then run into payment problems could pay off their energy company through a loan. Insiders emphasize that this is one of the many options on the table. It is not yet clear when the final plan will be presented.
