After 27 years of providing space for locals to hone their bow and arrow skills at the self-proclaimed “world’s largest and best indoor archery range”, the two ranges and the large store will close in mid-November.

“We have provided an outlet for the community to experience all aspects of archery for hunting, competition and recreation,” business owners Alan and Lorna Southwood wrote in a Facebook post.

“The success of our company is due to our dedicated customers, employees and professional staff shooters. We appreciate and thank you for your business and support over the years.”

The post saddened the long-established company’s customers in the city as the news spread across several social media platforms, with hundreds of comments thanking the owners and wishing them well.

“I didn’t realize how much of an impact we had on everyone until we saw all the comments,” Lorna said of the response on social media.

The Southwoods said the move comes after the building owner chose not to renew their lease. It marks the end of the decades in which the husband-and-wife duo built the sport of archery in Calgary.

“We’ve been in it for a long time,” Lorna said. “If it were possible to stay here, we probably would for a few more years, but we can’t stay in our space because the landlords have other directions to occupy the space.”

The company has existed since 1978, initially as Robin Hood then Vichers for a short period. Alan had been working for the previous owners for several years he and his wife bought it in 1995 and changed the name to the Calgary Archery Center.

The center’s closing sales began Thursday as it begins to clear out space for the move in November.
