Tennis legend Roger Federer makes a surprising decision | sports

Swiss tennis player Roger Federer revealed his decision to retire from playing today, Thursday, at the age of 41.

Federer made it clear that his retirement will be after the Laver Cup, which begins a few days later in the British capital, London.

The Swiss legend has had a tough few years, having been sidelined since Wimbledon in 2021 after undergoing triple knee surgery while on vacation.

In his statement to his fans, the 41-year-old Federer said: “To my family in tennis and beyond, of all the gifts that tennis has given me over the years have been the people I have met along the way: my friends, my rivals and most of the fans who give the sport a life. Today I want to share some news with all of you.”

“As many of you know, the past three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries. I worked hard to get back to the full competitive level. But I also know my body’s capabilities and limitations, and its message to me has been clear lately.”

“I am 41 years old,” Federer said. I played more than 1,500 matches over the course of 24 years. Tennis treated me more generously than I could have ever dreamed of, and now I must realize the time is right to end my competitive career.”
