Tom George Interview: See How They Run

The rise of the whodunnit continues with See How They Run. The film centers on a world-weary detective and overzealous constable in 1950s London as they investigate the murder of multiple crew members for an Agatha Christie play.

Ahead of the film’s arrival, Screen Rant spoke exclusively with director Tom George to discuss See How They Run, making his feature directorial debut, how to set yourself apart in the whodunnit genre, and more.

Screen Rant: I’m very excited to talk about See How They Run. I watched it yesterday, and it was an absolute blast. I love the whodunnit genre, and it fits very well in there. I know you’ve directed plenty of TV before, but what was it about the film that really spoke to you to make your feature debut?

Did you feel any kind of challenge to really find a way to set yourself apart in a time where whodunnits are back on the rise, thanks to Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot and the Knives Out movies?

In a movie like this, there are multiple actors filming murder sequences in order to help keep the mystery alive. Did you have just the actor who was the murderer film those scenes, or did you have multiple performers to help keep that mystery alive?

In the West End of 1950s London, plans for a movie version of a smash-hit play come to an abrupt halt after the film’s Hollywood director is murdered. When world-weary Inspector Stoppard (Sam Rockwell) and eager rookie Constable Stalker (Saoirse Ronan) take on the case, the two find themselves thrown into a puzzling whodunit within the glamorously sordid theater underground, investigating the mysterious homicide at their own peril.
