According to the latest report from the Department of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health, updated on September 9, the Coquimbo Region has so far recorded 12 cases of monkeypox, ranking third in national infections.
Indeed, the region is only surpassed by the Valparaíso regions, with 15 cases, and by the Metropolitan Region, which already has 510, all figures that will have a new update tomorrow, Friday, September 16.
Meanwhile, regarding the age groups that concentrate the largest number of infected in the country, the group between 30 and 39 years leads, followed by the range between 20 and 29 years, with 98% of them being men, while only the 1.3% are women.
Although the numbers seem to be low, the truth is that currently, this disease is managed based on an epidemiological surveillance protocol that begins with a health alert – a measure recommended by the World Health Organization – which is in force until next September 30.
In this regard, the Health Seremi, Paola Salas, explains that in Chile, monkeypox is managed with a protocol that was approved last August 22, whose surveillance is activated in the event of a suspected case, that is, that person “who has symptoms and that may be the one with the primary definition of monkeypox, which is having a rash on the skin or mucosa and multiple appearances in other parts, including fever greater than 38.5 degrees, chills, muscle pain , and even headaches”, he explains.
It clarifies that yes, that the most characteristic of this disease, are the lymphomas or lymphadenopathy that generate a lot of pain in patients. “These people have to go directly to a health center, be it a Cesfam or a hospital, even if it is due to the person’s self-report, that is, they think they have monkeypox. There tests are taken that must be confirmed by the ISP, “adds the regional head of Health.
Now, in the case of a person who has been in close contact with a positive case of monkeypox, and presents some of the symptoms described above, he must submit to confinement for 21 days, while the corresponding tests are taken.
But perhaps the most important thing so far in relation to this disease is that a few days ago, the government confirmed that our country will have a vaccine to combat monkeypox.
It was the Undersecretary of Public Health, Cristóbal Cuadrado, who reported that it was possible to secure the acquisition of these vaccines, whose first shipment he assured will arrive during the current month of September.
In this case, it is the Jynneos vaccine from the Danish laboratory Bavarian Nordic, which consists of the live and modified third-generation Ankara cowpox virus. As explained by the authority, it has proven to be safe and effective, and is being used successfully in other countries.
Regarding those who will be inoculated, the Health Seremi, Paola Salas, explained that according to the recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Vaccines and Immunization Strategies, CAVEI, in line with those of the World Health Organization, vaccination was established in a prioritized group.
“In the first instance, close contacts of confirmed cases of monkeypox who are at risk of severe disease, for example, immunosuppressed people, HIV patients, and pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy, will be vaccinated,” he explained. the epidemiologist.
Meanwhile, for a second phase, Salas explained that the vaccine will be received by people who engage in high-risk sexual practices “or prophylactically, for example, to those who are exposed to HIV and also to people with HIV infection. All those people at occupational risk who are the ones who handle laboratory samples will also be incorporated into the vaccination plan. But that’s going to be done once we cover the entire first group.”
In relation to the start of the inoculations, the Health Seremi explained that this “would be starting in the month of October once the authorization from the ISP has been received. There we are going to determine the respective vaccination schedule through official channels of the ministry, ”she concluded.
