As conservatives continued to spread misinformation about Friday morning’s attack on Paul Pelosi, federal authorities on Monday filed charges for attempted kidnapping and assault of the alleged attacker, David DePape. They also revealed further terrifying details about the incident.
According to the indictment, San Francisco Police Department officers saw DePape hit Paul Pelosi on the head with a hammer shortly after arriving at Pelosi’s home, after which the Speaker’s husband fell to the floor and “appeared to be aware . When police searched DePape’s backpack, they found “including a roll of tape, white rope, a hammer, a pair of rubber and cloth gloves, and a journal.” Police also found “cable ties in Pelosi’s bedroom and in the hallway near the front door of the Pelosi residence.”
During an interview with an officer, in an ambulance taking him to San Francisco General Hospital, Paul Pelosi said he was asleep when Depape showed up in his bedroom and announced that he wanted to talk to “Nancy.” Told Nancy Pelosi wasn’t there and she wouldn’t be home for several days, DePape said he’d wait.
In a taped interview, after reading his Miranda rights, DePape told San Francisco Police Department officers that he planned to hold the House Speaker hostage and talk to her, and that if she told him the “truth” would tell, he would allow her to go, and if she “lie” to him, he would “break her kneecaps,” apparently adding that he was sure she wouldn’t tell the truth. During the interview, DePape said he considered Pelosi the “leader of the pack” of lies told by Democrats, explaining that he wanted to break her kneecaps because she would have to be driven to Congress, which would send a message to other lawmakers that there are consequences for their actions. According to the file, DePape also “explained generally that he wanted to use Nancy to lure another individual” to him. In the same interview, DePape admitted to breaking into Pelosi’s house with a hammer through a glass door. He also said that after waking Paul Pelosi, he began pulling ties out of his pocket to restrain the Speaker’s husband; that he did not leave the house after Pelosi called 911 because, like the founding fathers of the British, he fought against tyranny without the possibility of surrender; and that Paul Pelosi “took the punishment instead” when he hit the Speaker’s husband on the head after police arrived.
In addition to spreading misinformation about the attack and blaming the Democrats, in recent days Republicans have new ones political attacks on the Speaker of the House, demand she be firedand tell jokes about her husband being knocked unconscious.
