Riverdale Stars Become Sanderson Sisters In Killer Hocus Pocus Costumes

The cast of Riverdale is getting into the Halloween spirit as three of the series’ leads channel the Sanderson Sisters from the beloved Halloween film Hocus Pocus in incredibly detailed and accurate costumes. Hocus Pocus follows teenager Max Dennison (Omri Katz) as he inadvertently revives three witches. The battle, set in modern day Salem, between Max, his little sister Dani (Thora Birch), their new friend Allison (Vinessa Shaw) and the eccentric and comically dark Sanderson witches—played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy—has become cemented as a Halloween classic. The film frequently airs throughout October, with the Sanderson sisters known to inspire countless group costumes.

Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, and Madelaine Petsch have often to taken to social media to share glimpses into the endearing off-screen friendships they have formed, which comes as a contrast to the somewhat turbulent dynamics of their complex Riverdale characters who rarely seem to be on the same page as they confront the darkness hiding within their seemingly innocent small town. The actors are so close that they have even lived with each other while filming the show in Vancouver. With their closeness and established commitment to going all out for Halloween, it comes as no surprise that the trio decided to take on the Sanderson sisters together this year.

On her Instagram, Lili Reinhart shared the image of Camila Mendes, Madelaine Petsch, and herself dressed up as Hocus Pocus‘ Sanderson Sisters for Halloween. With each of the actors’ natural hair colors correlating to those of the Sanderson sisters, it was a natural fit for who would dress as which character in the iconic trio. It is also possible that the actors chose their costumes partially as a nod to the show that brought them together, Riverdale, which has been known to include supernatural elements into its consistently complicated plot. While the show originally explored the dangers of wealthy murderers and family secrets, Riverdale season 3 took a turn towards incorporating darker mystical forces likes “the Dark Lord” and curses. With the crossover between Riverdale and another Archie Comics series, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, in season 6, it became clear that the show had fully embraced the supernatural.

In fact, Riverdale has suggested that one of its central characters, Cheryl Blossom (Petsch) is a witch herself. While this decision was met with mixed opinions, as some found the plot line to be an abrupt shift in show’s focus, it is in line with the flare for the unexpected that the mysterious drama has come to be known for. Whether Riverdale clarifies its murkier plot lines either by doubling down on its supernatural elements or returning to its realistic teen drama roots will become clear when its final season, season 7, comes out sometime in 2023.
