“Blindspotting” Director Carlos Lopez Estrada Joins Remake of “Your Name”

Carlos López Estrada has been recruited by Paramount, Bad Robot, and Toho to rewrite and direct the live-action remake of the science fiction movie “Your Name”. The film is currently in development and is based on the 2016 romantic animated fantasy drama, considered a modern classic in Japan.

Lopez Estrada is writing the current script. The initial version was written by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Eric Heiserer, who is best known for his work on “Arrival” and “Bird Boxes.” Bad Robot’s JJ Abrams will produce the film alongside Hana Minghella and John Cohen, with Genki Kawamura, who produced the original film. “Your Name” has been a staggering success in Japan, generating over $230 million in this country alone.

In this re-imagined version, two teens discover that they are switching bodies in a magical and on-and-off fashion. When a disaster threatens to turn their lives upside down, they must travel to meet and save their worlds. Toho will distribute the film in Japan; Paramount will release the image in the United States and all other international regions.

Lopez Estrada is an Academy Award-nominated filmmaker from Mexico City. His first movie is “Blindspotting”. It premiered on the opening night of the 2018 issue of Sundance. Ignite Bidding War and was later released by Lionsgate Entertainment. López Estrada was nominated by the DGA for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Feature Film for the First Time, and the film was widely praised. Peter Debruge of Variety put the film on his list of the best films of the year, calling it “a thrilling take on life in contemporary Oakland”.

His second film, ‘Summertime’, which takes a look at how young Angelino’s life intersects, premiered on the opening night of the 2020 Sundance Show and was shown in cinemas the following year. His third film, Ray and the Last Dragon, was released by Disney in March of 2021 and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. On the TV side, López Estrada directed an episode of FX and Marvel’s “Legion”. He began his career directing music videos for musicians such as Billie Eilish, Father John Misty, Thundercat, Flying Lotus, Katy Perry, Carly Rae Jepsen and Kleppen. In 2012, he received a Latin Grammy Award for an animated music video he directed by Mexican artists Jesse and Joey.

López Estrada is currently developing an animated feature-length documentary slated for release in 2023, as well as a direct adaptation of Disney’s favorite animated feature, “Robin Hood.”
