“Heartstopper” Star Kit Connor “had to” come out, fans show support

Fans of Netflix’s “Heartstopper” and its creator are gathering around show star Kit Connor after the actor said he was “forced” to appear bisexual.

The 18-year-old actor made a rare appearance on Twitter on Monday, writing, “Back a minute. I’m a duo. Congratulations for forcing an 18-year-old out of himself. I think some of you missed the point of the show. Bye.”

Although Connor didn’t specify why he felt compelled to come out, some have recently accused the actor of “odd catching” on social media. The controversy began after photos emerged of him holding the hand of Maya Reveco, co-star of the movie “The Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow.”

In “Heartstopper,” Connor plays Nick Nelson, a famous rugby player who befriends Charlie Springs from Joe Locke. The two develop a romantic relationship.

Alice Osman, author, writer and host of “Heartstopper,” immediately shared her support for Connor at Reply to his tweet.

“I really don’t understand how people can watch ‘Heartstopper’ and then happily spend their time speculating on gender and judging based on stereotypes,” Osman wrote. “I hope all these people feel as embarrassed as FUCK. Kate you are amazing.”

In interviews with diverseOsman, Connor and star Joe Locke spoke about what they hope the Netflix series, which began production in its second season in September, will mean for LGBT youth.

“If ‘Heartstopper’ helps a gay guy on his next journey, or if he helps a parent understand their child a little better, it’s the most beautiful thing you can hear and feel worth it,” Osman said.

Connor added, “For a show where you see gay people being happy and getting together and uniting as a group, I think there’s something really beautiful about that. I think shows like ‘Orgasm’ are still kind of adult in many ways because they’re so dark.” And bravery. I think it’s really important to have a show that only depicts gay love and beauty.”
