New Whistleblowing Bill Approved By Federal Government

According to Zainab Ahmed, the minister of finance, the federal cabinet has permitted a model new draft regulation pertaining to whistleblowers.

Speaking to reporters following yesterday’s Federal Executive Council meeting, Ahmed well-known that the current whistle-blowing protection, which was launched on December 21, 2016, provides licensed security for people who voluntarily disclose acts of fraud, bribery, looted authorities funds and belongings, financial misconduct, and several types of corruption and likewise rewards them with 2.5 to 5% of the funds recovered by the Nigerian authorities, was shedding steam.

Reporters have been educated by Ahmed that the Council had adopted the draft legal guidelines to bolster the battle in opposition to corruption and safeguard informants who help the FG. restoration efforts by the Nigerian authorities have been stalling.

She said;

“The Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning launched plenty of memos at current. The first is the draft whistleblower bill for 2022. This memo has been reviewed by the Council and permitted with a provision to verify alignment with the Evidence Act.

“The aim of operationalising and placing in a whistleblower bill is to strengthen the battle in opposition to corruption and to permit security for whistleblowers that current knowledge for use by the federal authorities.

“As you already know, since 2016, the Council has permitted the organising the Presidential Initiative of Continuous Audit. PICA has been working in partnership with EFCC, ICPC, DSS, and NFIU and the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation.

“We noticed that the whistleblower policy response has lost momentum. We embarked on engagement in the six geo-political zones, and one of the main outcomes we found is that people are concerned about their safety due to providing information. So, this bill is critical to ensure the effectiveness of the retention of the whistle policy.”
