Wakanda Forever Concept Art Reveals Alternate Black Panther Designs

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever concept art reveals a new look at alternate design ideas for Shuri’s updated superhero suit. Ryan Coogler’s sequel, which closes out Phase 4 of the MCU, puts Letitia Wright’s Shuri and Angela Bassett’s Ramonda center stage as they deal with their grief at T’Challa’s (Chadwick Boseman) passing. While recovering from the loss of their king, a new threat emerges in the form of Tenoch Huerta’s Namor, a mutant determined to protect his underwater kingdom at all costs. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has been met with mostly positive reviews from audiences and critics alike, many of whom praise Wright’s powerful performance as Shuri, who takes up the mantle of Black Panther.

With Shuri now officially the new Black Panther in the MCU after the loss of T’Challa, artist Wesley Burt has taken to Instagram to share concept art from the recent sequel. The art reveals a handful of unused designs for Shuri’s suit in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, including some iterations that feature striking, colorful accents. Check out Burt’s designs below:

The ending of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever sees Shuri finally embrace her grief, signaling that she is now truly ready to become the Wakandan hero. Winston Duke, who plays M’Baku recently revealed that his character is indeed the new King of Wakanda at the end of the film, meaning Shuri’s character is already very different from T’Challa, who served as King in addition to being the Black Panther. Shuri hasn’t been confirmed to appear in any upcoming MCU Phase 5 movies, but the two upcoming Avengers installments in Phase 6 seem likely to feature Wright’s character in some capacity.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars are set to serve as the climactic entries in Phase 6 of the MCU, concluding what has been dubbed the Multiverse Saga. Aside from the fact that one or both of these movies will prominently feature Jonathan Majors’ Kang as the central villain, little is known about what the films’ stories will entail. Considering T’Challa played an important role in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame after his own solo film in 2018, it’s likely that Shuri’s Black Panther will be a key player in the fight against Kang, potentially even becoming a core member of the new Avengers roster.

Outside of her role in large team-up films like the two new Avengers titles, it’s also possible that Wright’s character will get her very own solo movie after Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. There have been no official announcements just yet regarding a third movie in Coogler’s franchise, but Marvel producer Nate Moore has previously shared that the idea has been discussed and that whether it happens or not likely depends on how audiences receive the most recent sequel. It’s unclear if Shuri will return in a prospective Black Panther 3, but the character is clearly slated to play a crucial role in the MCU moving forward.
