Conroe ISD votes to keep ‘perks of being a wall worshiper’ in libraries, but off-curricular after late-night debate

Conroe, Texas (KTRK) – The book ban discussion at Conroe ISD on Tuesday night continued well after midnight. The book in question will remain in high school libraries in the area – for now.

Council leaders held a final vote on “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” just before 1 a.m. on Wednesday.

After the parents and other community members spoke, the board members shared their feelings. Some said they read young adult fiction before the late-night vote.

“I don’t tell a kid he can’t read it. I say, ‘Go ask Mom and Dad first,’” said one board member.

The board voted to remove the book from the curriculum, but would allow it to remain in circulation in high school libraries.

Board members will vote at a later date to revise the opt-in and opt-out policy that allows parents to select appropriate materials for their children.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower was published in 1999. It is a novel about sex, drugs, and alcohol.

A popular movie based on the novel was released in 2012.
