Copa America 2024: Houston’s NRG Stadium considers next steps on its way to hosting CONMEBOL and CONCACAF tournaments

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – If you’re talking about Houston Hosting the 2026 World Cup With a few errors, then you have to talk about practice.

And in true Allen Iverson form, H-town might actually get some practice at hosting the world’s biggest international soccer tournament by once again holding the 2024 America’s Cup.

A source told ABC13’s Adam Winkler that Lone Star Sports and Entertainment and the Harris-Houston County Sports Authority have received initial contact from organizers to consider a bid for next year’s hosting. They add that they have begun the process of exploring next steps.

For those unfamiliar, the Copa América is a 16-nation football tournament featuring teams from South and North America. Houston hosted three games during the 2016 tournament, including the semi-finals that saw the United States fall to Argentina, 4-0, in front of a crowd of about 71,000 people.

What will be new this time, if NRG ends up hosting, is that Houston is armed with the fact that it will host the 2026 World Cup matches, which are being held not only in the United States but also in Mexico and Canada. Plus, Houston may get the chance to host a match featuring newly minted World Cup champions Argentina and superstar Lionel Messi.

The tournament is scheduled to start from June 14 to July 13, 2024.
