Cowboy Bebop Creator reveals the original title of the anime
Shinichiro Watanabe has made himself a legend in the anime world with a number of projects that have become classics in the medium, with the biggest being easily Cowboy Bebop, the anime series that followed Hungarian bounty hunters Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Fay Valentine, and Radical Ed. In a recent interview, Watanabe had the opportunity to talk about a number of different projects in his past, even revealing the name. Cowboy Bebop It was not originally the title of the series.
Watanabe touched on a number of topics, including how well it works Cowboy Bebop It has become since its inception more than two decades ago, with the emergence of popularity that was a surprise to the director of the anime:
“success Cowboy Bebop It is definitely more than I expected though. This was due around that time; The anime was not popular outside of Japan. Maybe something like that Akira It was very popular, but this was the exception rather than the rule. So the success Cowboy Bebop It was surprising and I still want to know why. I prefer Western films from my childhood, as I do American or European films over Japanese films. This is because I find Japanese films to be very emotional. So, there are things like really super emotional music for a big climax scene. In short, Japanese films have tried to make the audience cry. So by contrast, I preferred the international approach and wanted to make something cool. This is one of the reasons I didn’t like it Spaceship Yamato very much; There was a lot of melodrama.”

In chat with outlet forbesWatanabe revealed that Cowboy Bebop was originally going to be called “Shooting Star Bebop”, explaining that due to a “branding conflict”, the original name of the legendary anime series had to be changed:
In the original plan, it was named Nagaribushi Bebopor “meteor” bebop, but we ended up not being able to use that name due to a trademark issue. So we tried the English version of Shihab Star BebopAnd again we have another trademark dispute. So we thought about the story and centered it on bounty hunters, who could be known as “cowboys,” and that’s how we ended up with the name. Cowboy Bebop. In fact, it was Keiko Nobumoto who came up with the idea of calling bounty hunters “cowboys”. I thought we should use that in the title of the anime. Nobumoto and I share similar tastes and feelings towards things as well, so we can communicate very well, even without much explanation.”
