Dallas Zoo Incidents: Two monkeys taken from an attraction in the latest suspicious event

Dallas, Texas — Police said two monkeys were abducted from the Dallas Zoo on Monday, the latest in a string of bizarre incidents at the attraction being investigated — including the cutting of fences and the suspicious death of an endangered eagle in the past few weeks.

No arrests were made in any of the investigations, and the police did not say if the incidents were related.

Dallas police said they believe someone cut a hole in an enclosure and took away two emperor tamarins, small monkeys with long mustache-like whiskers.

“It was clear that the habitat was intentionally breached,” the zoo said in a statement that offered few other details.

The incident comes on the heels of the zoo’s Jan. 13 closure and a day-long search when a clouded leopard named Nova went missing.

She was eventually found near her home, but police said a tool was used to cut a hole in her fence. A similar wound was also found in the enclosure of langur monkeys, although none came out.

On January 21, an endangered eagle named Bean was found dead, and the zoo said the death did not appear natural. Greg Hudson, the zoo’s president and chief executive officer, said the eagle had “a wound.”

Ed Hansen, CEO of the American Association of Zoo Keepers, said he could not recall a zoo facing similar incidents with such frequency.

“It looks like somebody really has a problem with the Dallas Zoo,” Hansen said.

Hansen, who calls the Dallas Zoo’s reputation “excellent” in the industry, said that certified zoos have double-perimeter fencing and that a large zoo like Dallas would have security patrol.

The zoo said it has added additional cameras and increased nightly security patrols.

The zoo said on Monday that the two emperor tamarin monkeys that went missing will likely remain near their home — but a search of the zoo’s grounds failed to find them.

Animals have escaped from the Dallas Zoo before. Notably, a 340-pound gorilla named Jabari jumped a wall in 2004 and waged a 40-minute rampage injuring three people before police shot and killed the animal.
