Designing the Samsung Galaxy S23 could be trickier than ever

The Samsung Galaxy S23 or Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra may be built with the latest tempered glass, according to an inaccurate tip from the company that makes that glass.
Corning (Opens in a new tab)The company behind the Gorilla Glass material used in billions of smartphones has announced that its new Gorilla Glass Victus 2 will be used by Samsung for its “next generation of flagship Galaxy smartphones.” While the ad doesn’t mention the Galaxy S23 by name, it sure seems like that’s what they’re referring to. Previous rumors also supported this idea.
I used the Galaxy S22 Gorilla Glass Victus Plus series, which was really tough. But Corning says the Victus 2’s glass improves scratch resistance and drop performance. Especially on concrete, which Corning claims is the most common building material and therefore the most likely surface to drop your phone on.
We’ll likely see more of the best Android phones launched this year (and beyond) that offer Gorilla Glass Victus 2. But Samsung will be the first to use it, which could provide incentive for accident-prone phone users to make their next phone the Galaxy S23.
The Victus 2 toughened Gorilla Glass might be the most notable design upgrade for the Galaxy S23 series. The S23 Ultra doesn’t seem to change much from the outside, while the Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus seem to adopt the same separate rear camera design – giving a more unified look to the three phones.
Inside the new Samsung phones, we should see the new custom Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset that brings the phones powerful performance. New camera sensors are also expected, including a 12MP selfie snapper for all three phones, or a 200MP main camera for the Ultra model.
We’ll likely find out if the Galaxy S23 is indeed the Samsung phone Corning is talking about, and if other rumors are accurate, on February 1 in Galaxy Unpacked. But there’s still time to drop more Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Ultra rumors, so we’ll keep looking for more tips on these upcoming devices in the meantime.
