The Eagles lead the 49ers 31-7 in the NFC Championship Game to secure a Super Bowl bid

Jalen Hurts caught one of Philadelphia’s four rushing touchdowns and the Eagles soared to the Super Bowl, forcing both San Francisco quarterbacks out of the game with injuries and defeating the Injured 49ers 31-7 in the NFC Championship game on Sunday.

The Eagles, who won the Super Bowl five years ago with a different coach and quarterback, will try to do it again behind the great duo of Hurts and head coach Nick Siriani. Philadelphia will play either the Cincinnati Bengals or former Eagles head coach Andy Reid in Kansas City.

This is an amazing night and I ask Philadelphians to celebrate joyfully, safely, and with respect. And remember: It’s a Philly thing “.

“Obviously that’s something you dream about as a kid,” Eagles coach Nick Siriani said after the game and “All of those guys on the team have dreamed of this their whole lives, too.”

Siriani added, “To be able to do that with a group of guys who love each other, who are connected to each other, and who would do anything for each other is a very beautiful thing.”

Miles Sanders ran for two touchdowns and linebacker Hasson Reddick caught the hit that forced 49ers’ rookie quarterback Brock Purdy out of the game with an elbow injury. Reddick also recovered a fumble from Birdie’s replacement Josh Johnson, who later suffered a concussion.

That forced Purdy back into the game, but his injury was clearly a factor as the 49ers all gave up on layups, even while trailing by dozens.

San Francisco’s bad luck at quarterback was finally too much to overcome as their 12-game winning streak came to an end. The Niners lost both Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo to season-ending injuries, and Purdy—the last pick in the April draft—was lost as a first-time starter.

Philadelphia police greased traffic and lampposts in what often proved a futile attempt to slow down upcoming festivities. But the city that was starved for a championship now has its beloved Birds in the Super Bowl just three months after the Philadelphia Phillies reached the World Series.

“You see this city and the passion they have for this team. We appreciate these fans,” Siriani said. “Look at this place. There’s no place like this in the NFL. It’s a hard-working city, it’s a blue-collar city. We think this is the kind of team we have.”

The game fell apart in the final minutes, with Philadelphia’s Kvon Wallace and San Francisco’s Trent Williams sent off for their roles in a brawl. Williams grabbed Wallace from behind and slammed him to the ground.

At that point, who cares? Eagles fans waved their green towels and took to the wild as confetti fluttered around them. They sang the fight song—one more emphatic “Eagle Eagles!” — in celebration of the franchise that advanced to its fourth Super Bowl.

The Eagles broke the game open in the final two minutes of the first half, drawing out a crowd that had been quiet with nervous energy since going down in the opening inning.

Sanders broke away on a 13-yard touchdown run for a 14–7 lead, and concluded a 14-play, 75-yard drive, going with three 49-punt returns.

Johnson fired his gun and fumbled on the next drive, reddick—the free pick from Carolina that had one of the great defensive seasons in franchise history—recovered at the San Francisco 30. Boston Scott ran 10 yards for a touchdown and a 21-7 lead.

Although the Hurts weren’t nearly a factor—he had 97 yards in the first half—the Eagles were firmly in control. Hurts finished 15 of 25 for 121 yards. A one-yard rushing touchdown in Philadelphia’s signature rugby-style QB sequence made it 28-7.

“It was a lot. I wouldn’t do that about me,” said Hurtz. “This city is a special city. They deserve everything, it’s a special city. We have another one.”

Purdy left the game with an elbow injury after being drilled into his arm by Riddick on San Francisco’s first drive, resulting in a fumble. The 23-year-old Birdie’s unlikely rise from “Mr. Irelevant” to playoff start ended in a cringe as he failed to become the first rookie QB to lead a team to the Super Bowl.

He was improbably needed again in the third quarter after Johnson, a reserve driver signed in December, was injured.

The Eagles used quick thinking as they scored on their opening drive for their second consecutive playoff game. DeVonta Smith made a sensational one-handed catch for 29 yards, but replays showed he appeared to lose control of the ball as it hit the ground. Smith emerged and waved the Eagles frantically. Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan did not challenge the call and the Eagles walked off the next play. Sanders scored on a 6-yard run.

With little hope that they could get anything behind Johnson, the 49ers turned to Christian McCaffrey to join the board. He broke up three tackles on a 23-yard catch that made it 7-7 in the second quarter.

With no players able to throw, it marked an end for Shanahan’s Niners, who managed 164 yards of offense and 11 first downs.
