Wildcat has recently been released to positive reviews from audiences and critics alike. Tackling sensitive issues that affect people the world over, director Melissa Lesh and Trevor Frost (Romeo & Juliet, 2015) have captured a moving documentary about two people who have serendipitously met in the midst of the Peruvian Amazonian Rainforest. Following the story of Harry, a discharged military man who joined the army as an 18-year-old and Samantha, who is a graduate student currently running a cat sanctuary in the middle of the rainforest, we are shown a story of self-recovery which is aided by an orphaned Ocelot. The documentary is at times, raw, but the narrative has been assisted by Lesh and Frost as they implement footage to fill in some of the missing gaps.

Wildcat is a documentary that is in the who-is-saving-who category. After being discharged from the military after being diagnosed with PTSD and healing from physical burn injuries on his arm, he attempts suicide. After recovering from that stressful event, Harry decides that he needs to uproot and completely overhaul his life in order to survive. His chosen destination is the Amazonian rainforest and after settling down, discovers the Hoja Nueva nonprofit organization created to care for orphaned animals. Enter Sarah.

At first, the relationship between Harry and Samantha is Platonic, but it is soon revealed that this blossoms into a romantic partnership. In a journey that seems wildly hopeful in its intentions, Harry has been put in charge of nursing a baby ocelot who has been abandoned by its mother and the similarities between cat and man are obvious to see. Both having been chewed up and spat out by their environments, their connection is intense and although Harry does most of the mothering, the ocelot does him the world of good allowing him to focus on something other than his own problems. However, the relationship isn’t immediately healing as Harry’s depression flares up on countless occasions, perhaps because he understands that his relationship with the ocelot can only be a fleeting one. This affects his relationship with Samantha and the pair endure a tumultuous time together. Since Harry’s depression manifests itself in self-harm and suicidal thoughts, Samantha takes it somewhat personally but soon realizes that it doesn’t have anything to do with his feelings for her and that the only way to recovery is through oneself. The drama builds, making Wildcat one of the best documentaries on Amazon Prime so far this year.

Although being raised by a strong mother, Samantha’s father was an alcoholic which obviously brought its own disruptions to the family’s life. This shared experience with human abuse and similar mental health difficulties cements the pair’s relationship and their bond is one formed by past and present shared experiences. Wildcat displays all the cast’s personal internal conflicts which are diametrically opposed to their beautiful surroundings.

At the moment, Wildcat is not available to rent, so the only way to watch is with an Amazon Prime monthly subscription. Wildcat is suitable for maturer audiences due to the nature of the story, there is also some nudity, strong language and suggestions of self-harm. It has been given a certificate rating of 15. The documentary is only available in English, but subtitles are available in over 20 languages.
