Why is Julia Fox slammed over the mascara trend on TikTok?

Julia Fox recently found herself in hot waters with social media users from all around the world following her ‘mascara trend’ misunderstanding on TikTok.

Here is everything you need to know.

The mascara trend on TikTok explained

The ‘mascara trend’ is the recently coded way for TikTok users to talk about their romantic relationships.

In addition, people are using the term ‘mascara’ to describe their s*xual experiences without the risk of getting banned by the app and as a part of TikTok content moderation.

For instance, a user wrote, ‘I’ve had my mascara since I was 14. I’m now 24. Only mascara I’ve ever tried but I know there’s nothing like this one anywhere else.’

In addition, users often use the word ‘mascara’ to replace the term s*x, while they also use ‘mascara wand’ as a stand-in for the word ‘p*nis.’

Why has Julia Fox faced backlash over the mascara trend?

Julia Fox came under fire on TikTok for replying to a user’s story about someone using his ‘mascara’ without consent.

If you didn’t know, Conor Whipple took to his TikTok earlier this week to describe his experience with sexual assault using the mascara trend.

He shared, ‘I gave this one girl mascara one time and it must’ve been so good that she decided that her and her friend should both try it without my consent.’

However, Fox replied to the story by saying, ‘Idk why but I don’t feel bad for u lol.’

Hence, the Uncut Gems Star left the internet divided. While many criticized Fox for her ‘out of touch’ comment, others were quick to come to her defense saying that she might not be aware of the mascara trend.

A user wrote, ‘I was also very confused. I feel like she had no clue.’

Meanwhile, Fox confirmed later this week that she was indeed unaware of the mascara trend or what Whipple was talking about in the post.

The 32-year-old actress began with, ‘I commented on a video because I thought this guy was talking about getting his mascara stolen by some girl, and then the girl lent it to her friend.’

She added, ‘ And, as I read it, it just seemed so dramatic in the video, and I was like, damn, don’t catch a case — it’s just mascara. But it was, in fact, not just mascara.’

Fox then went on to make a sincere apology for her remark as she said, ‘I’m really sorry, I’m really showing my age right now.’
