Premier League giants Newcastle United are keen on MLS star Cade Cowell and San Jose Earthquakes’ general manager believes that a big move will come around ‘sooner rather than later’.
A winger who made his name on the other side of the Atlantic, and was clocked as Major League Soccer’s fastest player recently, comparisons between Cowell and Miguel Almiron are an inevitable as a Shola Ameobi goal in the Tyne-Wear derby.
The California-born 19-year-old has played his way onto Newcastle’s radar, per 90Min. And, after an outstanding campaign with the Earthquakes in 2022, club chief Chris Leitch is not surprised to hear that Cowell could soon be following in Almiron’s footsteps at St James’ Park.
“I am confident based on what we’ve already entertained that the right situation will come. And if I was a guessing man or a betting man, I would guess that it would come sooner rather than later,” Leitch tells the Daily Mail.
“(There is) big boy interest (from) top teams in top five leagues.”

While Almiron does most of his best work on the right, Cowell is more comfortable on the left. He scored five goals and set up three more last season, the teenager likening his style to that of Kylian Mbappe (Transfermarkt).
Like the PSG superstar, Cowell loves to cut inside onto his right foot and uses his lightning pace to very good effect. 90Min believe that Bayern Munich, who have taken a very close look at the American market in recent years, are another side keeping tabs on the two-time USA international.
“I don’t look at (the interest) as a threat at all,” Leitch adds. “There would be something wrong if teams weren’t coming after him and I wasn’t fielding phone calls and offers. I think it’s natural.
“With a young man that has some elite parts of his profile, I’m not surprised at all that there’s going to be interest in him.”
Cowell’s explosive pace may be his most obvious attribute. But Leitch insists that the former Reno 1868 loanee, who is also eligible to play for Mexico at international level, is adding far more strings to his bow as time goes by.
“When he was younger he was like; ‘Yeah ok, I’m one of the fastest on the field. Play me into space, or give the ball to my feet. Let me take this guy on one one’,” Leitch adds.
“Now, he’s picking up so many more things. He can combine, he’s got the ability to distribute. His aerial game is so much better than what it was even a year ago.
“How he thinks through the game still needs to get better, how he defends.”
