What we know about Greg McDermott’s wife and family ahead of Creighton University’s first ever Elite Eight berth in the NCAA Tournament.
This year’s NCAA Tournament is into the Elite Eight round with the second set of games set to get underway tonight (March 26).
The No.5 seed San Diego State Aztecs take on 6th seed Creighton Bluejays with the Bluejays advancing to their first March Madness Elite Eight in program history.
Creighton beat NC State in the First Round before upsetting No.3 seed Baylor in the Second Round. They followed that up by halting the Cinderella run of 15th seeded Princeton.
The Bluejays have emerged as a solid team under head coach Greg McDermott, who in turn has established himself as one of the top coaches in the country.
Greg McDermott’s wife Theresa is a breast cancer survivor
Greg McDermott’s wife is Theresa McDermott, who was born Theresa Lynn Adams on July 3, 1965. She graduated from UNI in 1987. Her and Greg reportedly met during their college years and tied the knot in 1992.
Theresa McDermott is a breast cancer survivor, and was diagnosed over 18 years ago at the age of 39. At the time her and Greg’s daughter Sydney was just five years old.
The couple are heavily involved in Creighton’s annual Pink Out game which raises awareness for cancer research.
“We’d love to get the messaging out the importance of early detection in the fight against cancer because it undoubtedly, certainly, increased Theresa’s chance of survival at the time because it was caught early,” McDermott said.
Since the first Pink Out game at Creighton in 2011, the event has raised more than $331,000.

Greg McDermott’s family includes his three children, sons Doug and Nick and daughter Sydney. Nick is an avid golfer and has caddied on the PGA Tour, working with the likes of Ryan Moore at the Sony Open in Hawaii.
Most NBA fans will know Greg McDermott’s other son, Doug, who currently plays for the San Antonio Spurs. Doug McDermott played college basketball at Creighton with his head coach father at the helm.
He led the nation in scoring in 2013–14 and was a three-time consensus first-team All-American. Doug finished his college career with the fifth-most points in NCAA Division I men’s basketball history
Doug was selected 11th overall by the Denver Nuggets in 2014. He has played for the Bulls, Knicks, Thunder, Mavericks, Pacers and Spurs.
