FG approves N24.2bn for broadband internet connection in 20 airports, 43 schools across the nation

The federal government has approved the sum of N24.20 billion for the provision of broadband internet connection in 20 airports, 43 schools and six marketplaces across the nation.

Isa Pantami, minister of communications and digital economy, made this known after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday, March 29.

Pantami said that 20 airports were selected from the six geo-political zones.

The minister noted that, “Certain intervention projects are going to be implemented by the federal government through the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

“We will provide internet connection in 20 selected airports in Nigeria and higher institutions of learning and also some markets to support small and medium enterprises.

“In each geopolitical zone, you have around three airports.

“In the south-west, we have Lagos and Ondo. For the south-east, we have Anambra and Enugu.

“For the south-south, we have Port Harcourt and Akwa Ibom. For the north-central we have Abuja and Ilorin.

“In the north-west, we have Kano, Sokoto and Kebbi, and for the north-east we have Yola, Maiduguri and Gombe,” he added.

The minister added that 43 institutions will benefit from the project.

Pantami noted that, “In the first memo approved during the FEC meeting today, we selected 20 airports, both domestic and international.

“In addition, we also have 43 institutions of learning. So in total, 63 institutions are going to benefit and the sum of N18.95 billion has been allocated for this cause.

“The second memo is for the provision of broadband to selected markets, and six markets are going to benefit from this and the federal government will spend N5.25 billion to achieve this,” he added.
