‘I’m told’: Romano claims Klopp really wants to bring ‘extraordinary’ teenager to Liverpool

Liverpool are interested in signing Florian Wirtz with Jurgen Klopp understood to be a huge fan of the Bayer Leverkusen playmaker.

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who has been speaking about Wirtz’s future on YouTube.

Romano claims that Barcelona are certainly following Wirtz and have scouted him on a number of occasions.

Real Madrid are also interested and Romano claims that Liverpool are ‘monitoring’ Wirtz closely.

Romano suggests that Liverpool boss Klopp is a ‘big fan’ of Wirtz and the Reds are showing an interest.

However, no deal is expected for Wirtz this summer.

Instead, the attacking midfielder is likely to stay at Bayer Leverkusen until 2024 and made a move after featuring for Germany at the European Championship.

That means Liverpool face a wait for Wirtz but Romano describes their interest as ‘important to mention’ against Barcelona and Real.

“Barcelona are following the player, for sure,” said Romano. “Their people have been in attendance many times to follow the player. The same also [goes] for Real Madrid, so the two Spanish clubs are monitoring the player, but I’m told English clubs are also keeping an eye on Wirtz, especially the situation of Liverpool is one to watch, because Liverpool are monitoring the player.”

“I’m told that Jurgen Klopp is understood to be a big fan of Florian Wirtz, and so they’re among many clubs who are monitoring this player. I say monitoring and not negotiating, why? Because the expectation around Wirtz and Bayer Leverkusen is for the player to stay, at least for one more year, to play the Euros in summer 2024 as a Germany player of course, by staying in the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen – and then maybe make a move later in summer 2024.”

“So, this is the expectation for Florian Wirtz. But Barca, Real Madrid and also important to mention, Liverpool are monitoring the player. At the moment, it’s a very open race because nothing will be decided now,” he added.

Romano has also tweeted that Liverpool ‘keep following’ Wirtz, so this one isn’t going away any time soon.

Florian Wirtz has already rejected Liverpool once

Back from a major knee injury, Wirtz is looking to recapture his best form again for Leverkusen.

It’s easy to forget that the playmaker is still just 19 and has the potential to become an absolute superstar.

Hailed as ‘extraordinary’ by Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, Wirtz is one of the top teenagers in Europe.

Liverpool have had Wirtz on their radar for a while now and he actually chose Leverkusen over a move to Anfield.

Leverkusen youth coach Patrick Helmes told Sport1 in 2020 that Wirtz rejected Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund to join Leverkusen from Koln.

Leverkusen is just about half an hour away from Koln and Helmes felt that the close proximity played a part in Wirtz’s decision.

It’s clear that Liverpool have had Wirtz on their radar for a while now and we can understand why Klopp is such a big fan.

Actually convincing Wirtz to join is a battle in itself though and Klopp will hope for better fortunes if Liverpool do make their move.
