Jonathan Lazo charged: 3 men injured and killed by drunk driver while parked on I-10 East Freeway, deputies say

Harris County, Texas (KTRK) – Three men who were standing outside a car were killed when a drunk driver crashed into them along the I-10 East Freeway overnight in the Channelview area, according to investigators.

Harris County sheriff’s deputies were called to the 16852 East Freeway at approximately 12:30 a.m. Friday after a crash was reported in the outside lanes near the Magnolia Street exit.

The outbound lanes were closed for hours while deputies investigated the fatal crash. All lanes have since reopened.

Jonathan Lazo, 24, has been identified as the driver. He is charged with driving while intoxicated and charged with three counts of manslaughter, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

The deputies said three men were stopped on their shoulders and got out of their car. That’s when the driver of the Tahoe traveling in the same direction, later identified as Lazo, struck the three men, killing them.

Lazo was arrested at the scene. The deputies said he was not hurt.

The deputies said it was not clear why the three men stopped on their shoulders. Investigators believe they are all in their twenties.

“I’m just asking the community to come together. We have at least two families here who will be forever changed,” said Capt. Anthony McConnell. “The other thing I want the community to do is stop drinking and driving. It’s a very simple and easy incident to avoid.”
