One-time Tottenham Hotspur staff member makes claim about Mauricio Pochettino return

Mauricio Pochettino is open to rejoining Tottenham Hotspur according to former Spurs recruitment ace David Webb.

Former Head of Elite Identification and Development at Spurs, Webb has been speaking to The Sun about Pochettino, having worked together at Tottenham between 2015 and 2018.

Webb claims that he doesn’t know exactly where Pochettino stands with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.

However, Webb does believe that Pochettino is open to taking the Tottenham job again having left in 2019.

The Argentinian has been out of work since leaving Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season.

Pochettino seems to be keen on becoming Tottenham boss with Antonio Conte surely on his way out this summer – or even sooner.

Yet Webb does think that Pochettino is also open to joining clubs in La Liga or the Bundesliga, so a move to Tottenham isn’t a foregone conclusion.

“I think Spurs will change coach,” said Webb. “I don’t know the ins-and-outs of how fractured Poch’s relationship is with Daniel, and I don’t think that Poch wants to pigeon-hole himself solely to the Premier League.”

“If a good offer were to come up in Spain or Germany, he’d be open to that, too. But the Premier League will always be his first choice. He was phenomenal at Tottenham — and would be open to it again,” he added.

Internal struggle over Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham return

If you ask most Tottenham supporters, they would love to see Pochettino make a triumphant return to North London this summer.

Pochettino was loved by Spurs fans and most can accept that the club haven’t been able to truly replace him since his exit.

The fans aren’t making the decision though and Tottenham don’t seem totally convinced.

The London Evening Standard note that Tottenham decision-makers are split on bringing Pochettino back.

The old adage is to ‘never go back’ and maybe Tottenham think they need a completely fresh start rather than bringing Pochettino back.

Webb talks up Wilfried Zaha to Tottenham

Webb also talked about the future of Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha.

The Ivorian is out of contract this summer and could decide to move on after so many years at Selhurst Park.

Tottenham famously wanted to sign Zaha back in 2016 and Webb has highlighted that Pochettino has always been a ‘big fan’ of him.

Webb added that Zaha would prefer to stay in London when his Palace deal ends and there may be scope for Pochettino to finally lure him to Tottenham after all.

“I know Wilf was very close to Patrick,” said Webb. “If he was thinking of going then it’s probably pushed him a little bit further towards that. He’s really settled from what I know, with all his family around the Croydon, Beckenham, Bromley area so if he was trying something new, ideally it would be another London club.

“I know he’s had good offers from abroad like Saudi Arabia but I think his ideal one would be to test himself in the Premier League at a higher club. I know Poch was a big fan of his. I still think he’s attractive for a couple of years because he’s still got great attributes for the Premier League,” he added.
