Report: Newcastle United now want to sign £35m Liverpool player who snubbed them last year

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United are rivalling Aston Villa in the race to sign Liverpool’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who claim that Newcastle are keen on signing Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer.

It’s stated that there have been no talks over a new deal for Oxlade-Chamberlain to stay at Liverpool.

Oxlade-Chamberlain is out of contract this summer and looks primed to leave for absolutely nothing.

That’s a big financial loss for Liverpool, who paid £35million to sign Oxlade-Chamberlain in 2017.

Italian clubs are interested in Oxlade-Chamberlain but a Premier League stay looks to be a real possibility.

Brighton and Hove Albion are thought to have wanted Oxlade-Chamberlain in January but didn’t want to pay a fee.

Villa and Newcastle are now interested too, seemingly sensing a bargain in the former Arsenal man.

Newcastle United wanted Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain last year

Maybe Newcastle’s interest in Oxlade-Chamberlain shouldn’t be a big surprise.

The Times reported in 2022 that Newcastle made a move to sign Oxlade-Chamberlain in the January transfer window.

It was suggested that Oxlade-Chamberlain wasn’t all that interested in a move to Tyneside though.

The 29-year-old would surely have a different take now though.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has barely been featuring for Liverpool and needs a fresh start away from Anfield.

Oxlade-Chamberlain does also have a personal connection to the North East; his fiancee Perrie Edwards hails from South Shields, so maybe a move to Newcastle could appeal.

Additionally, Newcastle were in a relegation battle when they went for Oxlade-Chamberlain last year.

Now making rapid progress and with a great chance of playing in Europe next season, the Magpies are much more attractive.

The Magpies are seeking midfield additions and whilst Oxlade-Chamberlain has been a case of unfulfilled potential, maybe Eddie Howe is the man to get the best out of him.
