Alan Smith says Son Heung-min has gone ‘backwards’ at Tottenham Hotspur as he expects Antonio Conte to get the sack for his outburst.
The former Arsenal striker added that Son Heung-min, who was the Premier League Golden Boot winner for the 2021/22 campaign, is now the ‘shadow of himself’.
Despite the 30-year-old’s continual struggles this season, mainly when he is starting, Antonio Conte has continued to put him in the XI and he has produced two league goals from it.
That has probably been one of the big surprises of the campaign for Spurs because there weren’t previous signs that Son was going to fall from such previous highs.
The interesting thing is that Harry Kane is still cooking and producing his best goalscoring season in many years, yet his partner in crime, has gone the other way, as a result, Michael Owen has warned Son that he now ‘needs to be careful’.
It’s probably a matter of time before Conte is going to get sacked, Daniel Levy is set to make his decision, and former striker Alan Smith doesn’t expect the Italian to be in the dugout for the trip to Everton after the international break, as he told Sky Sports News.
“It’s hard to see him there (at Tottenham for their next game) after what he’s said,” said Smith. “The way he has spoken over the last few months, it has always been ‘they’. Making reference to the club as ‘they’. A real disconnect there.
“There are a lot of lads in that Spurs team who have gone backwards. Sonny has been a shadow of his former self.”
CAN SON REDISCOVER FORM?
More than likely, Conte isn’t going to be in the dugout when Spurs travel to Merseyside to take on relegation-threatened Everton after the international break.
It will be interesting to see if Son can rediscover his form because Tottenham really need their £22 million star (Guardian) back to his best.
But things could become worse for the north London club, especially if they miss out on Champions League football this season and then lose star man, Harry Kane.
