'Stepped up': Manager says Leeds have a surprise leader in their ranks, only 19 years old

England U-19 manager Simon Rusk has praised Leeds United youngster Darko Gyabi for his leadership qualities.

The former Manchester City wonderkid joined the Whites in the summer and only recently, Javi Gracia admitted that he could be in contention for a starting spot.

Now, Simon Rusk has raved about how much of a natural leader Leeds United have in their ranks in the talented Darko Gyabi.

Simon Rusk praises Darko Gyabi as a leader

The 19-year-old is considered as one of the most naturally gifted defensive midfielders in the country, which is why Jesse Marsch’s side at the time decided to take a punt on him.

However, talent can only take any prospect so far as the difference in mentality distinguishes the good from the great players.

It seems like Leeds do not have to worry about that one bit with Darko Gyabi as England U-19 boss Simon Rusk has highlighted his leadership qualities.

“I think what I do have is, there are a few players who would possibly be deserving of the armband. We had the camp in September”, he told the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“Darko lent himself to some leadership roles, he captained the group in one of the games. We lost Sam Braybrooke unfortunately, due to a nasty injury earlier in the season so Darko’s stepped up to that well.”

Major positive for Leeds

While any and every one that lives, eats and breathes Leeds United is aware of how highly-rated Darko Gyabi is, the fact that Simon Rusk has confirmed that he has the potential to emerge as a brilliant leader is a green flag for the club.

Much like Kalvin Phillips showcased such traits at such a young age, the same could be the case with Gyabi, which is key in a side that has struggled this season.

Perhaps Leeds could have their next captain on their books already, if things go to plan.
