The first round of NCAA Tournament Elite Eight games are in the books with the second set of games set to get underway tonight (Sunday 26 March).
In the second game of the day, the No.2 Texas Longhorns take on the No.5 Miami Hurricanes. The Longhorns are led by interim head coach Rodney Terry, who guided the team to their second Big 12 tournament title, and their first appearance in the Elite Eight since 2008.
So far the Longhorns have beaten No.15 Colgate in the First Round of March Madness, No.10 Penn State in the Second Round and No.3 Xavier in the Sweet 16.
It appears to be only a matter of time before he’s named the full-time head coach.
A look at his career in coaching
Rodney Terry was named Acting Head Coach at The University of Texas back in December before being named Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the 2022-23 season in January.
Terry graduated from Angleton High School and played college basketball at St. Edward’s University in Austin before graduating in 1990.
In the mid 1990s Rodney worked at Baylor as an assistant, and in 2002 joined Texas as an assistant coach under Rick Barnes where he spent a successful 10 years. He helped recruit players like Kevin Durant and helped the team reach the NCAA Tournament Final Four in 2003.
He then worked at Fresno State, helping them reach the NCAA Tournament. In 2018 he was appointed the head coach of the University of Texas at El Paso men’s basketball team.

Throughout Texas’ run this year fans have wondered if Rodney Terry has a wife. He is not married, but Terry does have a girlfriend who he often posts about.
Rodney Terry’s girlfriend is Vielka Rivers, who he often shares photos with on social media. Terry has shared various birthday and Valentine’s Day messages to Vielka, including a recent photo of the two together at a Texas game.
Rivers’ Instagram is set to private but according to her bio she is an entrepreneur, stylist designer, model, teacher and and mother.’
Vielka, who was born in Nicaragua in 1975, is the owner of Mercer Salon. She was previously married and has two sons, Prince Elias and Eden Elias Ewing. Eden was born in 1997 was a power forward for the Purdue Boilermakers.
He most recently played for Minas in Brazil – NBB.

Rodney Terry’s parents are parents Tarasha and Calvin Philips, who gave birth to Rodney in Arlington, Texas, in 1968.
In 2022, he posted a Mother’s Day message with Tarasha. ‘Happy Mother’s Day to all the great Moms around the world today! I’m Blessed to have one if the Best!’ he wrote.
Sadly, Rodney lost his father in August 2022.
At the time he posted a picture with his dad and family with the caption: ‘We lost the rock of our family yesterday. He was an incredible beloved, educator, mentor, friend and coach to so many. He inspired me to also work with young people and become a coach. Proud of you Dad as Father knows best! We miss already. Thank you all for your prayers’
