'The aggression': Jermaine Beckford wowed by the turnaround of £12m Leeds star
Jermaine Beckford has lauded Junior Firpo for how he has turned his form around at Leeds United after his ‘difficult’ start to life in Yorkshire.
In 2021, Leeds United signed Junior Firpo for £12 million from Barcelona (Sky Sports) to replace the dressing room-mad, Ezgjan Alioski.
Given the gung-ho and all-action style of Marcelo Bielsa, it wasn’t easy, especially if you are a defender, to play in that system, as Firpo found out.
Last season, the 26-year-old had to dive deep, alongside his Leeds United teammates, to survive on the last day of the Premier League season.
Fast forward to the present, another manager in the dugout, this time Javi Garcia and the same issues face the Whites.
But, as former striker Jermaine Beckford pointed out, the Yorkshire faithful are now starting to see the Firpo they expected when he first joined from Barcelona, as he told Leeds United’s official podcast.
“We are seeing players like Junior Firpo, he has had a difficult start to his Leeds career,” said Beckford. “The injuries, form, not just from himself, but the team as well.
“He is starting to come into his own. You see the confidence in him. This is the player we thought we were going to sign initially when he signed from Barcelona.
“We thought we were going to see the control, the aggression, the passing ability and his positional sense are getting much, much better as well. You feel a little bit more assured when teams are attacking down the left-hand side. You feel he’s in with a good chance here of doing something half-decent.
“You are seeing that more and more.”
STILL A LONG WAY TO GO
Those three points away at relegation rivals Wolves were massive for Leeds, the only issue is that the international break had to come in between.
Whilst that win pushed Garcia’s men out of the drop zone, the players and team will be fully aware that even the slightest of slip-ups, then they are back in danger.
But, in comparison to those around them, the feeling is that the Whites have some sort of momentum as they hope to avoid another final-day drama to maintain their status in England’s top flight.
