Harris County, Texas (KTRK) – A driver was injured and killed after the person’s car came to a stop on South Sam Houston Parkway eastbound at US-90A Wednesday night.

At around 9:20pm, the parked silver Altima was hit in a moving lane by the driver of a pickup truck that was coming off the ramp, Harris County Constable Precinct 7 said.

The driver of the Altima, who was still inside the vehicle, died.

Authorities planned to conduct a field sobriety test to determine if the truck driver was intoxicated.

According to the Houston TranStar, “Every minute a motorist stops on a freeway, the risk of being seriously injured or killed increases exponentially, and the chance of a secondary accident increases by approximately 3%.”

Last year, ABC13 spoke to officials at the Drag and Go program, which is run by the Houston-Galveston Area Council.

If you are in a situation where you can move your vehicle, officials advise standing over your right shoulder.

They also say that if your car breaks down, turn on your warning lights, lock the doors and keep your seat belt on.
