Tesla’s electric semi trucks are being recalled over a faulty electronic parking brake, according to a notice posted online by the NHSTA. The recall comes after Tesla made its first deliveries of the highly anticipated Semi to PepsiCo and Frito Lay last December.
“A parking brake that has not engaged as expected may allow the vehicle to roll when the driver releases the brake, increasing the risk of a crash,” NHSTA said in its recall notice.
The recall only covers 35 vehicles, a further testament to how few of these have ever been delivered. According to the NHSTA, Tesla will replace the faulty brake free of charge.
The all-electric Tesla Semi attracted a lot of attention in 2017 when it was first announced during a glitzy event by Tesla CEO Elon Musk. For customers starting in December.
The Tesla Semi has an impressive range of 500 miles on a single charge and has received pre-orders from companies including Walmart, Anheuser-Busch and UPS. PepsiCo hopes to have 100 Tesla Semi trucks on the road by the end of this year.
As CNN notes, there are several social media posts that show a Tesla Semi broken down on the side of the road during its relatively short life. But Tesla has been known to fix problems with software updates after the cars are introduced. In the case of the brake recall, it’s clear that it wasn’t something that could be fixed with an over-the-air update.
Tesla did not respond to a request for comment on Saturday, probably because the electric vehicle company closed its PR office in 2020. I’ll update this article if I hear back, but I won’t hold my breath on that.
