No, President Biden did not serve in the military. However, being the President is the Commander-in-Chief for al the armed forces.

How did Beau Biden die?
Beau passed away on, May 30th, 2015, due to brain cancer. It has been reported that prior to his diagnosis he had a history of health issues.
In 2010, he even had a stroke which led to him taking a break from his duties. He was quick to join the service once he was deemed fit to return.
However, three years after this, his health started deteriorating once again. He was then admitted to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He was eventually diagnosed with brain cancer.
He underwent several treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation but they were not fruitful.
Their relationship explored
President Biden and Beau were really close to each other. Even throughout his election campaign, Beau was mentioned time and again.
In 2015, while delivering his Yale commencement speech, President Biden spoke about his children and said: “By focusing on my sons, I found my redemption. The incredible bond I have with my children is the gift I’m not sure I would have had, had I not been through what I went through.”
He also remembered Beau by adding: “I am even more proud to be standing here doing this from the Major Beau Biden facility. Ladies and gentlemen, I only have one regret: He’s not here because we should be introducing him as president.”
