The 7 Best New Movies to Watch This Week on Netflix, Max, Hulu, and More (May 29 – June 4)

This weekend brings an interesting batch of new movies to watch online. While we’re highlighting reality — the new HBO original movie starring Sidney Sweeney on Max — the service is also introducing Magic Mike III this week.

Elsewhere on our list, one of the best new movies of 2023 hits home. BlackBerry’s take on the popular smartphone with its clickable keyboard is much better than you’d probably expect. However, It’s Always Sunny features Philadelphia native Glenn Howerton as a grumpy CEO, so it should have been good.

Netflix subscribers may turn to To Leslie for the movie that sparked a lot of drama Oscar nomination for star Andrea Riseborough. Oh? Do you want a supernatural thrill? Hulu offers a movie where Satan comes to Earth. We also have the new Ben Affleck movie, too.

reality (max)

Reality Winner (Sydney Sweeney), a former member of the USAF who went on to work for US intelligence, soon leaks classified materials related to the 2016 US presidential election. Then the FBI shows up to question her.

Reality is a stark focus for Sweeney, best known as dramatic actress Cassie in Euphoria and hotel guest Olivia in The White Lotus. In the run-up to its release, Reality had an impressive 100% score on Rotten tomatoes.

hypnotic (digital)

A Ben Affleck movie you’ve never heard of? Available to watch now? Did I get your attention? Well, Hypnotic is exactly what it says on the box, a crime drama where a very bad guy (William Fichtner) has the power to instantly hypnotize victims, making them obey his commands.

Affleck plays a cop who is still mourning the loss of his daughter, but he has a chance to make things right by saving other young girls. Co-stars Alice Braga.

To Leslie (Netflix)

To Leslie, from Michael Morris, it’s all about how fast you can fall. Leslie (Andrea Riseborough) is a single mother in West Texas who manages to win the lottery. However, her alcohol problems are eroding her newly acquired finances. Co-stars include Marc Maron, Allison Janney, Stephen Root, and Andre Royo.

Leslie may be most famous for the controversy she has created, as many believe that To Leslie has paid a lot of celebrities to pay attention to her. Many of those talking about the movie online used the exact phrase “a small movie with a giant heart.”

Magic Mike’s Last Dance (Max)

If you save the last dance for the broadcast, you’ll see the Magic Mike trio finish on Max. Here, Mike Lane (Channing Tatum) returns to his favorite dance form after a period of time out of the game due to the Covid-19 pandemic decimating his livelihood. Financier Maxandra Mendoza (Salma Hayek Pinault) is the investor he needs.

Of course, the two slept together before planning their final big show in London. Critics gave Tatum points for his insistence on charm across the screen, because he still made it fun even if the tone was a little darker.

BlackBerry (digital)

I was as shocked to write this as it is to read: The movie about the origins of the BlackBerry is one of the best movies of 2023. Available for digital purchase this week, BlackBerry dethrones the ambitions of the tech industry’s lovable losers.

The BlackBerry works perfectly due to the perfect way Glenn Howerton (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) plays Jim Balsillie who convinces nerds Mike Lazaridis (Jay Baruchel) and Douglas Friggin (Matt Johnson) to let him take over. Although it goes against most of what they want.

And then — spoiler — when the iPhone shows up and destroys everything, you’ll see the tech world in a new light. That’s why I finally understand the rush for MR/VR/AR headsets.

Close (Showtime)

A pair of 13-year-old boys (Eden Dambrine and Gustav De Waele) in Belgium have the strongest friendship, and one that’s far closer than any of their peers could fathom. This, of course, doesn’t last when the boys go to high school, and gossip turns to shame.

Dambrine and De Waele won critical applause for their natural performances in a very tough film.

Devil’s Plot (Hulu)

Now, something for those who want something completely different. The Devil Conspiracy is a tough action movie where humanity is at war with Satan. It all begins when the Shroud of Turin is stolen, to return Satan himself to a voluntary body.

Will “hell,” as the movie’s villains claim, come to Earth? Should you watch? This is between you and Hulu.
