Darren Bent has expressed his surprise at Tottenham Hotspur pushing to make Celtic’s treble-chasing boss, Ange Postecoglou, their next manager.
The former Tottenham striker thinks Daniel Levy is taking a ‘risk’ if he looks to replace the sacked Antonio Conte with the 57-year-old.
Ange Postecoglou has won the lot in the colours of Celtic and on Saturday, if the Bhoys see off Inverness CT in the Scottish Cup final, then they will be treble winners.
But could that be the last dance for the Greek-born Australian? The latest rumours suggest that interest in big Ange is starting to ramp up from Tottenham’s end.
Celtic have been here before when Brendan Rodgers left for Leicester City. He ended up winning the FA Cup with the Midlands side, including a number of fifth-placed finishes, but he was sacked prior to their relegation to the Championship.
And, on the other side of Glasgow, Steven Gerrard, after leaving Rangers, flopped in the colours of Aston Villa, so could another title-winning manager in Scotland be heading to England’s top flight? Bent has doubts about Postecoglou.
“It is a great achievement (what Ange has won at Celtic),” said Bent. “If I am Spurs, I don’t watch that much Scottish football, but I watch the derby, his record at Celtic is incredible. 112 matches. He has won 62. He has only lost 18 out of 112, which is phenomenal.
“When you look at the managers Spurs have been linked with and they haven’t got, the likes of Potter. I know he hasn’t been successful at Chelsea. You have got Brendan there. You have Nagelsmann.
“The fact that they are now turning to Postecoglou now, you are thinking ‘Uhmmm. Why?!’
“Also, if you are Postecoglou and you know that they have been linked with all these managers. Why would you want to go there, if you are the sixth or seventh choice? – I think it’s a risk. There would be options I would have ahead of Postecoglou. I am not trying to diminish anything he has done in Scotland because what he has done is fantastic, but as we have all seen, the Premier League is a different animal.”
SHOULD POSTECOGLOU JOIN TOTTENHAM?
It would be a step up, in terms of coaching a team in England’s top-flight, in comparison to a team in Scotland.
But Spurs are in a mess, they could lose their star man Harry Kane this summer and there will be no European football at Hotspur Way next season.
In comparison to Celtic, not only are they notching up the trophies for fun. They will also be competing in the Champions League next season.
