Biden jokes he 'got sandbagged' after tripping over on stage at Colorado graduation

Joe Biden tripped over a sandbag at an event in Colorado this week and many are wondering why the object was on the stage.

The US President was handing out diplomas at the Falcon Stadium to hundreds who were graduating from the US Air Force Academy.

Videos show the 80-year-old tumbling over and plummeting to the ground as nearby people rush to help him to his feet.

Joe Biden wasn’t injured and later joked he “got sandbagged” – but why was the random object there? Read on to find out…

Why was there a sandbag on stage?

The sandbag was on stage to secure two teleprompters that the Democrat had been reading from earlier in the ceremony, CNN reveals.

Both teleprompters had been taken away following Biden’s speech but the sandbag was still in the middle of the stage.

As he got up after the tumble, you can see the President pointing at the bag which had accidentally gotten in his path.

“There was a sandbag on stage while he was shaking hands,” communications director Ben LaBolt wrote on Twitter. “He’s fine.”

President jokes he ‘got sandbagged’

The politician remained in good spirits after the fall and even joked about it later to reporters after returning to the White House.

“I got sandbagged!” he said – which is a term that means “to hit or knock over someone as if with a blow from a sandbag”.

However, in this case, Biden really was hit by a sandbag, making the comment completely hilarious – and he said it with a grin.

This isn’t the first time he’s fallen

This isn’t actually the first time the President has stumbled over, and the funny fall has become a meme on social media.

He famously tripped up the stairs of his plane the Air Force 1 in 2021, but was left uninjured and got to his feet straight away.

Biden also fell while riding a bike with his wife Jill near their Delaware beach home in June 2022 and his bike shoe got stuck.

He’s made a few speech blunders too, like asking ‘Where’s Jackie?’ months after politician Jackie Walorski passed away.

Plus, the 80-year-old once struggled to pronounce the word kleptocracy during a White House conference and was roasted online.
