'He can't do that under Postecoglou': Pundit warns Tottenham about signing 55-cap int'l

Julien Laurens has warned Tottenham Hotspur about securing the transfer of Manchester United captain Harry Maguire because he wouldn’t be able to play under Ange Postecoglou’s style of play.

The European football expert added that Ange Postecoglou, who won the domestic treble with Celtic this season, is ‘front foot’ in his approach, both when his teams are attacking and defending.

As a result, Laurens made it clear that Harry Maguire ‘can’t do that’ because Tottenham won’t sit back with their new manager now, as he told ESPN.

It’s expected that Maguire will head for the Old Trafford exit door this summer, he has become a bench player under Erik ten Hag’s stewardship.

Tottenham and Aston Villa are the two clubs that have expressed interest so far, but either way, the 30-year-old has a big call to make about his future during these coming months.

One factor that was noted by Laurens was the ‘big money’ Maguire is earning at Manchester United, he is still a key figure for England and he will probably demand such wages at his next club, so that might also come into play.

“He’s on big money as well, let’s not forget, loads of money,” said Laurens. “He has been offered to pretty much every club in the Premier League.

“The clubs that would realistically take him, so not Man City, not Liverpool or Arsenal. But Spurs and others, for sure. But he is on big wages.

“Just to finish on Maguire, how does he want to play? Postecoglou doesn’t play counter-attacking football. He plays possession football. High intensity. Front foot playing. Front foot defending. And Maguire can’t do that (under Postecoglou), right now.”

Would Tottenham and Villa fans be happy with Maguire?

The issue with the hard-hitting centre-back is that he isn’t exactly riding a wave and he has produced a number of error-prone performances during the last few years.

There is this negative cloud over his head. Fans still question why or how he still gets picked for England.

Therefore, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Tottenham and Villa fans are unsure about their team signing the 55-cap England international.

Villa play a very high line under Unai Emery and Maguire wouldn’t suit that. Whilst he isn’t the answer to Tottenham’s major defensive issues.
