Kano gov, Kabir Yusuf insists on demolition of structures built on govt properties
The governor of Kano state, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Thursday, June 8, said that there is no going back on the ongoing demolition of illegal structures in the state.
Yusuf made this known through the state deputy governor, Aminu Gwarzo.
Recall that the state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Saturday, June 3, demolished structures at Daula Hotel and Hajj Camp in the Kano metropolis.
The multimillion naira buildings were destroyed just like the first three storey buildings with 90 shops on Race Course road, in the Nasarawa GRA, which was demolished over a week ago.
Also, the governor, while speaking on Wednesday, June 7, said that the demolition exercise will help his administration to reclaim government properties that were sold by the immediate past governor of Kano state, Abdullahi Ganduje, illegally.
He said that, “The demolition is still ongoing, I am determined to reclaim government properties that were sold or allocated illegally.
“This assignment is in the overriding interest of the public.”
Gwarzo, while speaking on behalf of the governor on Thursday night, emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and restoring order in urban areas while stressing the necessity for demolition to ensure sustainable urban development.
He also expressed concern over the negative impact of unregulated structures on infrastructure, drainage systems, and public safety.
The deputy governor condemned the sale of government assets by the immediate past administration for personal gain, without considering the consequences on the community.
He also criticized Ganduje for the sale of lands within the historic Massalacin Waje at Fagge LGA and portions of the Eid prayer ground, adding that they were lands with cultural and religious significance.
Gwarzo expressed dissatisfaction over the sale of portions of graveyards for the construction of shops.
The deputy governor, while speaking on the Hajj Camp, said that facilities within the camp were divided and sold, despite its purpose of serving as an exercise ground for pilgrims.
Gwarzo said that the present administration is taking steps to reconstruct the camp and ensure that essential amenities are provided.
In addition, he expressed disappointment that Daula Hotel, originally established by the late Audu Bako to train students in tourism and events planning, was sold by the immediate past administration.
