Kingsley Ben-Adir teases Gravik’s dark impulses

This week, a new villain arrives in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Gravik, played by Kingsley Ben-Adir, is a Skrull leader who spent years orchestrating a hostile takeover of Earth over Marvel Secret invasion. He is ruthless, cold, calculating, and downright terrifying. Throughout the show, Gravik makes it clear that there are no lengths he won’t go to in order to get what he wants. What drives a character like this?
Talking to collider Ahead of the Secret Invasion premiere, Ben-Adir spoke about the motivations behind Gravik. He clearly wants the best for the Skrulls, but he also has a lot of rage to push. Seeing others lose is more important than seeing his team win.
“I think he sees the pain he feels in other people’s eyes,” Ben-Adir said. “I think it’s as hateful a feeling as he has about himself and what he’s been through, he needs Nick and Talos to feel it too. And actually, I think the first two episodes, now that I think about it and now that I’ve seen it, and it was definitely clear in Reading the text, it is about their desire to experience pain for which he feels they are at least partially responsible. And that kind of continues. He’s not just trying to put up with everything. He wants them to see him do it.”
Later in the same interview, Ben-Adir opened up about how deep his own issue with Gravik was in the beginning Secret invasion. There is no going back for him.
“When this story starts, he’s gone,” said the actor. “He’s all the way there, and there’s no one to bring him back. And there’s some cool stuff where Talos tries, and that was really fun to play; like, how close are we to seeing him come back, and then he doesn’t, in the end.” Or maybe he can! If you lock him in a room long enough, he probably can, but on this show, it won’t be easy. “
