We’re now away from Marvel’s Secret Invasion, the latest, and perhaps the most important, MCU Disney Plus series out of say Loki or WandaVision. However, the Secret Invasion is the epicenter of a strange phenomenon.
People don’t exactly know it’s coming. Even the most die-hard Marvel movie and comics fan I talk to on a regular basis only found out about it last week when I brought it up. So, I thought this was a perfect time to explain what’s going on with the series once being described as a “crossover event” (Marvel has since changed its language on that page).
From its stellar cast to its action-packed story, which might remind you of The Winter Solider in more ways than one, Secret Invasion comes with a lot of potential. Here’s everything we know so far.
1. There’s only one Marvel movie you need to see first
You know who Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is, right? Did you know about a “blip” event where Thanos (Josh Brolin) took out half of humanity, only for them to come back again when the Avengers defeated Thanos in Endgame? Well, as long as you know these basics, you only need to watch one movie.
Yes, unlike many other Marvel movies or shows, there is only one piece of the MCU that you should be watching before Secret Invasion. This is the 2019 Captain Marvel movie, starring Brie Larson and Samuel L. This alien race has a complicated past, and Captain Marvel helps explain it.
Admittedly, Captain Marvel has a unique and divisive build, which sometimes looks like Ouroboros snake, but you won’t find the MCU’s story of the Skrull’s history anywhere else in the movies or shows. Skip this movie, as did Daniel Daddario diverse He said, you’ll be “on Wikipedia playing catch-up.” Secret Invasion will attempt to contextualize the series, but I definitely plan to rewatch Captain Marvel beforehand for a refresher.
2. Anticipating a Huge (Familiar) Plot
Despite this, these weird Skrulls have become a thorn in the side of the good guys, good gals and non-binary good fellows everywhere – we just don’t know it yet. This is because this shape-shifting species has used its powers to infiltrate positions in the highest echelons of power around the world.
Sound familiar? Well, join us as we head back to Captain America: The Winter Solider for the time being, as the memories of the brassy SHIELD seniors whispering “Hail Hydra” to each other are still fresh in our heads.
It’s only been nine years since Winter Soldier, so we feel comfortable thinking it’s too soon for a story about how the people who control the world are evil. Whatever this conspiracy theory may be, it’s evergreen to some.
3. This secret invasion won’t last long
So far, there have only been two Marvel Netflix shows, and Secret Invasion is one of its shorter adventures, running just six episodes. All other Marvel shows have lasted 9 weeks.
Since Secret Invasion came out on June 21, that means the entire series will end by July 26. So for everyone who is able to dodge (or doesn’t care about) spoilers, and is comfortable waiting until then? You don’t exactly Need Disney Plus for now, you can only re-subscribe at the end of July.
4. THE CRITICS ARE NOT EXACTLY LIKE
As I write this, Secret Invasion has a rating of 69% Rotten tomatoes The result, made up of some positive reviews with a lot of criticism, and some completely negative slams.
The biggest note comes from the great TV critic Daniel Feinberg Hollywood Reporterwho called Secret Invasion “average” and a “disappointment”. While all of the critics have only seen the first third of the series, he notes that so far “Less Secret Invasion is less Cold War and more generally Tepid Kerfuffle”.
Megan O’Keefe, in comma He curses the series, declaring “flabby scripts, uninspired visuals. Five years ago, Secret Invasion was first-rate entertainment. Now it seems, like Fury, a few significant steps behind the competition.”
5. But expect a great cast
All that said, I definitely still plan to watch. That’s in part because the cast is stellar – other than the people reprising their existing roles in the MCU, of which there are quite a few.
Yes, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury is joined by Maria Hill, Cobie Smulders’ agent, and Everett K. Talos. Don’t you remember him? Once again, watch Captain Marvel. He also had a small role in Spider-Man: Far From Home
But that’s not the big news: the inimitable Olivia Colman (The Favourite), Khaleesi herself Emilia Clarke, and rising star Kingsley Ben-Adir (Vera) are here. Oh, and Secret Invasion boasts Dermot freakin’ Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding) as the boss.
6. We’ve already met Emilia Clarke
And while the MCU hasn’t met the characters of Colman, Mulroney, and Ben-Adir before, we’ve already met Jiah, the character played by Emilia Clarke. Gia is the daughter of Talus (Ben Mendelsohn). The two reunited in the movie Captain Marvel.
In this film, young Jia becomes friends with young Monica Rambeau (now played by Teona Paris). One of the big questions is the status of Jiah’s mother, Soren (Sharon Blaine), who once impersonated Maria Hill. If Jiah has been radicalized, which seems possible, it may be because her mother met a bad fate.
7. Skip the Secret Invasion comics
Yes, there has been a secret incursion into the Marvel comics. No, it doesn’t matter here.
Director Ali Selim said inverse that Secret Invasion of the MCU is not the same as the crossover event of the same name in the comics, saying “I was told on day one, don’t bother reading it. It has nothing to do with this series.”
This is not conditioning. This is a product of “the energy Marvel experienced when they saw Sam Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn on screen in Captain Marvel.” Marvel Studio execs seem to have announced something to the tune of “We have to keep this going. It’s so electric.”
