Owners of 143,000 Lincoln SUVs have been warned not to park outside due to fire risks

Ford, Lincoln’s parent company, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are warning owners of approximately 143,000 Lincoln MKC compact SUVs to park them outside and away from buildings and other vehicles because they could catch fire, even when not running.

The problem stems from the battery monitoring sensor which may be damaged due to its location in the vehicle when servicing the battery or the electrical components around it. Damage may cause a short circuit, which, since there is no fuse in the circuit, can lead to overheating and fire.

The vehicles in question are model year 2015 through 2019 Lincoln MKC SUVs. Ford is aware of a total of 19 “possibly related” fires at MKCs, most of them in North America, NHTSA reports. However, the company is not aware of any fire-related bodily injuries.

Owners will be advised by mail to park outside and away from other vehicles. Owners are also advised to take their vehicles to a Lincoln dealer to have a fuse installed at no cost to the owner

Interested owners are also advised to contact a Lincoln dealer if they have any questions or call Ford Customer Service at 1-866-436-7332. Owners can also visit NHTSA’s SaferCar.gov website and enter their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to see if it was involved in the recall.
