Houston, Texas (KTRK) – Authorities said a suspect was killed during a gun fight with a Houston police officer in the parking lot of a shopping center on the city’s northeast side Saturday morning.
The Houston Police Department said the accident occurred at the 3800 block of Little York Road at approximately 3:15 a.m.
An officer was reportedly patrolling the area and witnessed a black SUV crash down Eastex Highway in Little York.
Police said the officer saw the driver of the sports car take off, and ran into the parking lot of the shopping center.
The EPA said the officer grabbed the man, who then pulled his gun.
The Public Health Department said the officer grappled with the suspect when the gun went off several times, hitting the suspect in the arm and wrist.
While this was happening, police said a security guard working at the shopping center heard the gunshots and went to help, issuing verbal orders for the suspect to show his hands. The suspect complied, and the officer was able to place him on the ground.
The suspect was taken to hospital and is expected to be fine. The officer was not hurt.
HPD said the SUV the suspect was driving was not listed as a stolen vehicle.
Officials said they are still working to find out what happened before the accident, as there were bullet holes in the SUV.
The investigation is still ongoing, and charges are still pending.
