Report: Tottenham now like ‘battleship’ West Ham are candidates to sign, he’s pushing to leave

Tottenham Hotspur chiefs are now interested in a swoop to sign Jonathan Tah of Bayer Leverkusen. But West Ham United are candidates to seal the defender’s transfer, too.

That is according to Bild, which reports that Tottenham have instructed their transfer crew to identify potential defensive targets. The north London outfit are keen to have a shortlist of possible signings ready ahead of appointing their new manager to fill Antonio Conte’s void.

One defender whom Tottenham have marked as fitting their desired profile is Tah. The 27-year-old is also now pushing to leave the BayArena after eight years with Die Werkself. He signed for the Bundesliga side from Hamburger SV in 2015 and has made 305 appearances.

Tottenham are interested in a transfer for Jonathan Tah

Tah is under contract with Bayer Leverkusen through to June 2025 after signing a new deal in September 2021. Yet he may leave Die Werkself for just €18m (£15.5m) due to a release clause. But interested clubs must trigger the clause before the start of July to get a bargain.

The deadline on Tah’s release clause could frustrate Tottenham’s interest in a transfer from Bayer Leverkusen. Spurs must decide on Conte’s replacement before launching any moves for the centre-half this summer. But their hunt for a head coach might yet leave it too late.

West Ham are a candidate to sign the Bayer Leverkusen star

Bild notes that Tottenham are not alone with an interest in eying Tah’s transfer from Bayer Leverkusen, as well. While Bild also reported in April that Tah hopes to now test himself in the Premier League and has spoken about moving to England with super-agent Pina Zahavi.

Zahavi is an expert in sealing moves to England and has been in talks with the defender for months. The German outlet also claimed that West Ham are a very concrete candidate for Tah’s transfer from Bayer Leverkusen. Nottingham Forest also bid €26m (£22m) in January.

Whoever signs Tah, should he leave the BayArena amid interest from Tottenham and West Ham, would secure the transfer of one of Bayer Leverkusen’s most important players. Once called a ‘real battleship’ by Christoph Kramer, Tah played in 33 of their 22/23 league games.
