HISD teacher salaries should be linked in part to school performance

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – Principals and teachers in the Houston Independent School District will soon be paid in part based on school performance.

The new salary system may have some managers making more than $200,000 a year.

“We could have an appraisal system, and we could stop and get regular compensation like we’ve always done,” said new supervisor Mike Miles, “but the most efficient and compliant way to do that, is to tie compensation to appraisal.” “

Miles spent the day with principals, sharing with them how they set their base salaries.

Administrators will spend the next year evaluating principals, and the new salaries will go into effect at the start of the 2024 school year.

HISD directors will now make between $110,000 and $195,000, which is a much wider range than the current system.

There are also great salaries for those who work in large schools, who have a lot of experience, and who work in traditionally low performing schools.

A year after this pay model went into effect for principals, the new superintendent says he will start a similar model with teachers.
