What happened earlier in the Vinland saga
Wolfe suggested that a messenger be sent to propose surrender, and to anticipate a decline in the enemy’s will to fight. Floki asked Canute if they could occupy the village houses instead of tents, but the Canute rejected the idea, and Sweyn mercifully acknowledged Canute as king. Ulmar, on the other hand, returned to Kattil’s stronghold, and watched the wounded and dying, while a young woman pleaded for his aid. Snake delivered Canute’s surrender request to Ketil’s family, but Ketil’s wife refused. Thorgill vowed to fight Canute with 20 men and asked for his mother’s support. However, Sverkel stressed that the decision should be made by Keitel’s chosen successor.
Ulmar decides to surrender, despite Thorgill’s initial desire to fight. Ulmar admitted his mistake and took responsibility for starting the war, wanting it to end.
