A professor of Applied Mathematics at the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Bawa Musa, has said the elimination of corruption in the political and health sectors “will earn Nigeria the trust of international donor agencies in releasing more funds in fighting diseases and other health challenges.”
Musa said this Friday at an inaugural lecture at the university’s main campus, stressing, “The government and non-government organisations should extensively utilise the quantitative information emanating from scientific research, particularly mathematical models.”
According to him, mathematical models are a tool for national development in all ramifications and that due to insufficiency of data, many researchers are unable to test the accuracy of their models.
He said resilient and sustainable systems for health (RSSH) remained the foundation for “defeating today’s infectious diseases as well as the bases for preventing, preparing for and responding to future pandemics.”
In his inaugural lecture entitled “Mathematical Model as a Recipe for the Control of Infectious Diseases: Perceived Benefits Versus Unintended Consequences,” he insisted that mathematical models had connections with real life situations which centered on “an existing entity system either a natural phenomenon or man-made.”
In his remarks, the vice-chancellor, Prof. Abu Kasim Adamu, commended Prof. Musa for the well-researched lecture and encouraged others from the department to emulate him.
He urged the nation’s medical practitioners and financial experts to avail themselves with the opportunity provided by the inaugural lecture to be rightly informed on the “current issues on perceived benefits and unintended consequences of infectious diseases ravaging Nigeria.”
