Eight in police net over UNICAL don’s abduction

No fewer than eight suspected kidnappers have been arrested by the Police in Cross River State over the abduction of Prof Ekanem Phillip-Ephraim of the University of Calabar.

The Professor of Medicine was reportedly abducted at her private hospital along Mountain of Fire Ministry Avenue, Atimbo in Calabar Municipality on July 13, 2023, and whisked away to an unknown destination by gunmen.

Prof Phillip-Ephraim has since spent 60 days in captivity.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo, a Superintendent of Police, disclosed this over the weekend while reviewing the Command’s activities in August.

This was just as she paraded about 13 other suspected hoodlums on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Gyogon Grimah at the Command’s headquarters in Calabar, the state capital.

The suspects were rounded up and paraded for offences ranging from kidnapping, rape, burglary to robbery, among others.

Ugbo expressed the hope that Prof Phillip-Ephraim would be rescued in no distant time as the police and navy were working in tandem to free her from the kidnapers’ den.

According to her, the suspects apprehended in connection with her kidnapping have given the police useful information that will help security operatives to unravel the knotty situation.

She stated that the “suspects will be charged as soon as investigations are concluded.”

She added, “I want to clearly state that the Command has assiduously strategised an onslaught on the criminal elements across the state, and will never compromise no matter whose ox is gored.”
