Kano gov warns against diversion of food items

Kano state governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has warned that any individual or group of people, including security operatives, arrested for diverting food items may end up serving his life in prison

This was just as he gave order to the police, Hisbah, and other security operatives to help apprehend anybody, no matter his or her position in society or government, who should be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law of the land

Governor Yusuf gave this warming on Wednesday at the flagging off of the 4th batch of 2024 Ramadan palliative distribution to 250,000 households and 20 beneficiaries per polin unit held at Tiamin Rice mill in Kano

“At this juncture, let me make it very clear and a sound warning that anybody, individually or collectively, who is found to have diverted a single bag of rice would be dealt with decisively and in accordance with the law of the land.

“I am saying this so that those who think that they can divert these items meant for vulnerable people should have a rethink on this. We will not allow, and we will never ever condone, any act of sabotage as far as the distribution is concerned,” the Governor declared.

“I would like to use this opportunity to call on both the Local Government Palliative Distribution Compliance Committee to adhere strictly to the guidelines stipulated for the distribution exercise in a transparent manner and with the view that the food items reach the target groups and individuals.

He said that this palliative of 250,000 of 25 kg is meant to be distributed to vulnerable people across the 44 local government areas of the state to cushion the prevailing hardship people were passing through

Gov.Yusuf noted that ” we all know that the Ramadan period is very unique in the anal history of Muslins, most especially during the fasting period, when most of less privileged could afford to buy food items, but with this, it would go a long way in addressing lack of foodstuff

Under this special programme, 224,440 households, meaning 112,220 males and 112,220 females from 11,222 polling units, will significantly benefit from this laudable Ramadan intervention.

“We are commencing the distribution today with the Kano South Senatorial District, comprising 16 local government areas, where a total of 31,670 bags of 25kg will, by the grace of Allah, be distributed,” the governor stated.

Earlier, the governor had inspected the product to ensure it was of good quality when the secretary to the state government, Baffa Bichi, instructed that a bag of 25 kg of rice be picked and opened at random before the governor could see it.

The chairmen of the local government were finally handed over the allocation letters for the rice according to what they were given.
