Samuel Bassey Ekwa, popularly known as Sneaky Special is a US-based Nigerian afrobeat music artiste. In this interview with NURUDEEN ALIMI, he dwells on his journey into music, what motivated his latest song and how Nigerian music can be further recognised globally:
Can you give a detailed information about yourself?
My name is Samuel Bassey Ekwa popularly known as Sneaky Special, I am an artiste, songwriter and music producer from Cross River State, Calabar, Cross River State. I am currently based in Lagos and the United States of America.
How would you describe your journey into the music industry?
I have always been in love with music since my primary school years. My brothers and I performed during the end of the year party of our school. I wrote my first song shortly after. I later joined a dance group in secondary school, I introduced them to writing and making music. Our first music recording was my composition. From then, people started admiring my craft and encouraging me to keep pushing harder and that encouragement propelled me to where I am today.
There a lot of music artistes in the US, can you say your music is acceptable?
Absolutely! Everyone including young people love my music. Afrobeat is an exciting genre of music that is relatively new to many and has really caught on in the US over the past few years, with the likes of Burna Boy, Davido, WizKid and the rest of them.
What motivated the release of your latest song?
The work life of Nigerians in the US, struggling hard to provide for families and the puddles people have to go through to migrate to the US is no small feat! It is not “child’s play”. My life’s journey in the music industry, growing from one level to another, picking up side hustles to invest in my craft, was my motivation. The moment I heard the beat for this tune, the inspiration just came to me.
Are you planning any collaboration with any Nigerian artist?
Yes, absolutely! But until that time, my team and I are keeping it confidential!
What makes your style of music unique?
I incorporate lively rhythms, infectious melodies, and fusion of various musical elements from the African continent along with contemporary pop music. I deliver catchy hooks and vibrant instrumentals with a captivating energy.
What are those things you think can be done to further put Nigerian music on the global scene?
In my own opinion, more collaborations with Western artistes. More Afrobeat festivals and shows outside of the African continent. Major Afrobeat artists supporting rising artistes who are trying to grow in the music industry while living in the diaspora.
