George Miller’s update on Max’s brief involvement in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga comes as a huge relief to fans of Furiosa’s character. Miller confirmed Max’s cameo in Furiosa, citing that the glimpse of Max and his Interceptor car would only be brief, with no confirmation that Hardy would be reprising the role. This will give fans an idea of where he is physically and mentally before the events of Fury Road, according to Miller. With this announcement, Miller will rightfully keep Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’s story where it is supposed to be: on Furiosa.

Furiosa needs to focus on Taylor-Joy’s character to not only flesh out her backstory but also to provide further insight into the post-apocalyptic world. There have been few details about who Furiosa was before the events of Fury Road, only seeing her battle prowess and glimpsing her anguish in the iconic scream scene. By diving further into those details, such as Furiosa’s tragic departure from the Green Place, the film can create its own identity as it goes into her life and showcases the world from a perspective outside of Max’s limited understanding.

Through Furiosa’s story, parts of the world of Mad Max can be showcased for the first time and give new context to events in prior films, giving Furiosa and others stronger motivations and connections. Showcasing things such as the Green Place in its prime can give audiences more context for Furiosa’s actions in Fury Road, allowing the story to expand as it looks at new locations and people that Max has never met. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga can also give further context to certain events in Fury Road, Immortan Joe’s death, enriching it with the history and emotions of another character.
